Warmth of Stone Eyes

When Asch pressed the tear-shaped emerald into my hand, I was quite surprised. It was small, roughly the size of a pear only flatter. A simple leather cord was laced through it; so that it could be worn as a pendant.

"What's this?"

Asch half-turned, taking a step into the darkness; the firelight reflected in his hair and eyes. While his hair seemed to be on fire, his eyes cold; unreadable. For a brief moment, warmth seemed to flicker in them, but it was gone as fast as it had come.

"Why do you want to know?"

"I'm curious. This seems... important to you, so why give it to me?"

Yes, I admit that I did have some idea of what it was, but I wanted confirmation. He hovered for a moment, thinking through what he could say or would. There was always the chance that he wouldn't answer at all.

"It's an engagement stone. My engagement stone; in Kimlasca, each male child of nobility is given one at birth. It's unique to each person."

"Oh." I looked back at it, "Why give it to me?"

"What part of 'engagement stone' do you not understand?!" I turned bright red at what he was insinuating.

"Wait! You want to - I mean -"

"Maybe. Right now just keep it with you. One day, I'll come back and do it properly. Just wait for me until then."

"I..." I swallowed; I really had no idea to say. "... I'm honored."

Now the embers of the dying fire seemed to be right there in those emerald eyes. They looked softer, unguarded if only for a brief time, and maybe wetter then usual. He looked like he might cry, at least, his eyes showed that. His eyes would always betray him.

But before I could say anything more, he'd disappeared into the gloom of the forest. And when I look back on it, I feel that he was not only walking away from me but out of my life forever. What's odd is that I barely know him, and yet I have an attachment to him. I can't really define what it is, I just know that it's there. I miss him.

It's been two years since then, and neither Luke nor Asch has returned. But for me, all I have to do is pull out that emerald and I am taken back to that night.

You see, in the right light it takes on that same warm glow that his eyes once had.

Asch's eyes.

FIN.
